KEY ACHIEVEMENTS

Key Achievements/Activities
  • • Through advocacy and lobby has been able to bring about changes in policy and government decisions, e.g. a. Was instrumental in bringing about the ban in the use of explosives and other noxious substances to fishing in the waters of Sierra Leone. b. Stopped the construction of private structures along a vital route to the National Parliament.
  • • Has planted 1000s of trees with the involvement of communities and school children on fragile and deforested lands in the country, especially in forest reserves. • Green Scenery is working with school children in four regions of the country; the Southern, Eastern and Northern provinces and Western Area. They are given the necessary education on the issues of Environment, human rights, conflict resolution and leadership. Every year, for the past four academic years Green Scenery trained 35 school teachers in environmental management, 40-75 teachers in conflict resolution, 455 children in environmental education and human rights issues, 200 students in conflict resolution and transformation. The Peer Mediators engage in intra-school and inter-school peacebuilding. • Numerous press releases on issues bordering on the areas of intervention of the organization have been made. • Undertaken research on fire wood consumption and its impact on deforestation and made findings public. • Supported the research and publishing of a paper on political transitions in Sierra Leone. • Undertaken numerous public education and awareness programs like radio/TV discussion programs, newspaper articles, “Green Run for the Environment.†• Have trained and is still involved in training of teachers, students, community members, NGO personnel in human rights, conflict resolution and environment promotion and protection. • Launched an advocacy campaign against Koidu Holdings Limited for Kimberlite blasting mining process and was successful to have their Insurers (MIGA) suspend it political risk insurance until the company takes remedial measures. • Have developed a research oriented Policy Paper Series, which intends to provide information that can influence policy in all our intervention areas. Two Policy Paper Series were released in 2004, two in 2005 and one in 2006 • Have produced and published two teachers manuals on the environment • Have produced two training manuals on peace building and further reviewed them • Have successfully facilitated the establishment of a network of Peer Mediators in schools in Kenema and Makeni, Bo and Freetown • Have produced for two consecutive years training manuals in human rights and peacebuilding. • Green Scenery is serving as the national coordinating secretariat for the National Advocacy Coalition on Extractives (NACE). • Documented and published perception of host communities on operations of Sierra Rutile • Have brokered peace between Government Secondary school, Jimmy Bagbo and the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. • Have successfully been able to eliminate violence from inter-secondary schools games and sports for three years (2004, 2005, and 2008) in Bo, Freetown, Kenema and Makeni. • Enhancing capacities of various commercial motor bike drivers’ unions in human rights, peacebuilding and democratic practices. • Enhanced capacity of youths in Western Area on environmental protection and livelihood security. • Has developed and improving upon support to girl child education as an intervention within our livelihoods programme.
